Richard B. Gladstone Community Library
– Reading for All –

The RBG Community Library opened its doors in 2005 with a generous donation of 7000 Spanish-language children’s books (a) from Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company in Boston and Scholastic Inc., New York. Both donations were made in appreciation of the lifetime achievements of publisher Richard B. Gladstone.

We distributed the 7000 books to more than 30 community libraries, including our own,  throughout the Nicaraguan territory, as there were multiple copies of each title. Over the following 15 years we added donated and purchased books donated from the United States, Spain, Panama, Nicaragua, and Chile. We now have thousands of books in the library, including a strong collection of inviting illustrated books for early readers that young visitors can choose themselves (b).

Community members of all ages borrow books (c) like the perennial favorite “Jorge el Curioso”, and many stop by to read (d, e), browse, or study. In 2019 we inaugurated our “George Washington Carver BioCultural Diversity Reading Room” (f), named for one of the founders of modern regenerative agriculture. The GWC Reading Room houses a collection of over 400 titles, all Spanish-language technical references on agriculture, natural resources, and related topics with content specifically focused on the Chorotega Biocultural Region.

Our reading outreach in the community of Palo Solo, at the home of a volunteer family, introduces children too small to walk to the library or to their pre-school to the joys of stories (g). Early reading and engagement (h) has paid off in better learning outcomes once these children go to first grade, according to their teachers.

For elementary age children, our English teacher Jasseling and Coordinator Karla have organized a popular Reading Club (i) that meets after school in the library to discuss chapter books (j) and to develop analytical and writing skills through that old favorite “The Book Report”. And, at our annual December party we further reward reading by choosing the most faithful visitor to the library programs that year… shown here Elizabeth, the winner, and her prize “Clifford”! (k)
