Community Infrastructure

school-kids

LTI has been installing, repairing and improving basic services and school buildings from its inception as the Gladstone Fund.

Most recently we helped to organize and plan and completely funded the restoration of the Noehmi del Socorro Hernández Elementary School in Palo Solo in 2019. The school was badly deteriorated, in need of painting, ceiling repairs and with a gaping hole in the roof (a). Palo Solo parents contributed their labor over several weekends (b,c) and the results pleased the entire community of kids, teachers, administrators and parents (d).

When the RBG library was built in 2005, potable water had been only recently connected to the homes of Palo Solo and Temua. Before 2005, precious water was hauled uphill in jugs from several springs, and sparingly used for cooking and washing. The Gladstone Fund responded to this critical need in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan, and the Mayor’s Office of La Concepción and installed an 8 km main pipe and connections to over 50 homes along the route. Community members contributed their labor to digging the trench (e), and all celebrated a few months afterwards (f) upon savoring the first stream of water (g) for the 500 residents of two long-suffering communities.

Rural electrification swiftly followed the potable water project, with LTI contributing the connecting wire and installation to all homes along the route once the main line, poles and transformers were installed in 2006 (h).
